Unlike a bit, a qubit can--at least in theory, and if the program can be written in the correct way--be used in more than one calculation at a time. And if you add extra qubits, the process scales geometrically. A quantum computer with two qubits could run four calculations in parallel. A 20-qubit device could run over a million. A 1,000-qubit device could process more simultaneous calculations than there are particles in the observable universe.

Received in an email. Searched your site and could not find reference. Did Bill Clinton do this? Does the Muslim religion really believe that?

Dear Continental, American Airlines, Southwest, Delta, United, et al:

I have the solution to prevent hijackings and get our airline industry back on its feet at the same time.

Replace all female flight attendants with good lookin' strippers. What the hell? The attendants have gotten old and haggard looking. They don't even serve food anymore, so what's the loss? The strippers would double, triple, perhaps quadruple the alcohol consumption and get a "party atmosphere" going in the cabin.

Muslims would be afraid to get on the planes for fear of seeing naked women. And, of course, every heterosexual businessman in this country would start flying again hoping to see naked women. Hijackings would come to a screeching halt and the airline industry would see record revenue.

Why the hell didn't Bush think of this? Why do I still have to do everything myself?

Sincerely, Bill Clinton

Consider, for instance, that some archaeologists have assumed that hunter-gatherer bands persist with a half-life on the order of a few hundred years -- maybe 10 or 20 generations of time. This value might be an important element in the evolution of modern human behavior -- for instance, if it marks some kind of limit on the effective time period of oral traditions. Now, the potential number of ancestors of people after 10 or 20 generations is anywhere from a thousand to a million. It may make a great deal of difference how those million genealogical ties are organized -- if most of them come back by inbreeding to the same couple of hundred individuals, then the dynamics of groups will be quite a bit different than if they outbreed to several thousand or even hundreds of thousands of people. And if a large proportion of those links ultimately come back to a few group founders, then what those founders do in cultural terms might have a large material effect on their distant descendants.

Greater and Lesser Antarctica

The Antarctic is divided into two main regions, East Antarctica or "Greater Antarctica" and West Antarctica or "Lesser Antarctica", which are quite different geologically from each other. Greater Antarctica consists of a stable shield of very ancient rocks (pre-Cambrian) older than 570 million years and mostly above sea-level. Some rocks have been dated as far back as 380 million years. West Antarctica would, if the ice were removed, be simply a string of islands. The two regions are separated by the Trans Antarctic Mountains. In most places, mountain peaks protrude above the icecap. But the remainder of the topography of the continent is largely hidden beneath the ice.
